1997 Children and Belt Use

The majority of children under the age of 2 years (84%) were in car safety seats.  Safety seat usage was highest for children in the back seat.  Children ages 2 to 4 years were 7 times less likely to be in a car safety seat than children under the age of 2 years.  Only 38% of children aged 2 to 4 years were in car safety seats at the time of the crash.
This group was more likely to be in a child safety seat if they were in the back seat.
