Figure
3.05 shows that 96% of pedestrians
involved in a crash sustained an injury
compared to 22% of all crash
participants. The percentage of
pedestrian fatalities (4%) was higher
than the percentage of all crash
participants (0.3%).
Table 3.11 shows the number of
pedestrians, injured pedestrians and
pedestrians killed in motor vehicle
crashes by county. Salt Lake County had
59% of the pedestrian fatalities and 56%
of all pedestrians involved in
crashes within the state. Most of
the pedestrian crashes occurred in the
Wasatch Front. Following Salt Lake,
the majority of pedestrians were hit,
injured or killed in Utah (14.4%), Weber
(8.9%) and Davis (6.4%) counties. There
were 969 pedestrians involved in recorded
crashes during 1997. This is
approximately 7% less than the number of
recorded pedestrians involved in crashes
during 1996. This is due in part to the
change in reporting criteria in 1997.
There was an 11% increase in the number
of pedestrian fatalities during this
year.
